Black African, Black Caribbean, Mixed with Black heritage, and African Diaspora people aged 13-19 years old are invited to learn the process of natural dyeing with indigo.
This workshop has been created in collaboration and in response to social and racial injustices and the climate emergency. This workshop will be hosted by both Samantha and Jasmine Karis, whose collective initiative is to inspire more Black people into the Arts.
Textile and fashion designer Samantha is the founder of the sustainable clothing brand Tens Studio. Her work uses sustainable materials to explore Black history.
Jasmine Karis is a multimedia artist who seeks to connect her audience with their everyday natural surroundings through sustainable textiles processes. Her work spans community, wellbeing and the interweaving of language and visual imagery.
This practical knowledge workshop will introduce the process of natural dyeing with indigo and delve into the theory — uncovering the origins, histories, benefits and outcomes of working with organic colour.
Using a mixture of waste textiles, donated sample scraps and hand-made tote bags, participants will work with a variety of techniques and methods to create a unique textile they can take home.
Please note this workshop is suitable for young people aged 13-19 years old. Adult supervision is not required.
